Riverview supports the needs of artistically and academically gifted and talented (GT) students in our classrooms. Gifted and talented students have unique strengths and learning needs. Our teachers know that a responsive curriculum best supports their pace, style, and depth of learning. Our classrooms are places that nurture curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking that these students need. Academically talented students receive instruction aligned with South Carolina standards while offering opportunities for both enrichment and acceleration.
Students who are identified as GT learners are supported by a teacher who holds an endorsement in GT instruction. Our teachers utilize project and problem-based instruction, small group instruction, accelerated coursework and other best practices to meet the needs of GT students.
Academic Gifted and Talented:
To qualify as academically gifted and talented, under SC Code §59-29-170 and SC Code Ann. Regs 43-220, students must qualify in two of the following three dimensions:
- Dimension A — Aptitude Score at or above the 93rd percentile in one area (verbal, nonverbal, or quantitative) or 96th percentile composite on an approved aptitude test (CogAT, NGAT)
- Dimension B — Achievement Score at or above the 94th percentile in reading and/or math on an approved achievement test (SCREADY, i-Ready).
- Dimension C —
- Performance Grades 2–5: Meet qualifying scores on the Performance Task Assessment (PTA)
- o 2nd: 16+ (verbal or nonverbal)
- o 3rd: 18+ (verbal or nonverbal)
- o 4th: 16+ (verbal) or 22+ (nonverbal)
- o 5th: 18+ (verbal) or 25+ (nonverbal)
- Grades 6–12:
• GPA of 3.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale including English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Year-Long World Languages.
Artistic Gifted and Talented:
To qualify as artistically gifted and talented, students must audition in their selected performing or visual arts category and receive a qualifying score on the artistic gt rubric. Artistically gifted and talented screenings are held twice a year, once in the Fall and once in the Spring. Artistically gifted and talented students are eligible to choose specialized integrated studies classes at Riverview in their area of giftedness, participate in after school experiences such as Art Club, and are eligible to attend the annual Sea Island School for the Arts (SISA) Summer Camps offered by our sponsor, Beaufort County School District.
Referrals for gifted and talented screening:
Parents who wish to request that their child be screened for either academic or artistic giftedness may use this link to the SCDE Gifted Student Referral Form. Academic requests will be screened via the Naglieri General Abilities Test assessment (NGAT), administered in the Fall of each year. Artistic screenings will occur twice per year, once in the Fall and once in the Spring. Artistic gifted and talented screenings are conducted by our sponsor, Beaufort County School District, on-site at Riverview.
