SERVICE and LEARNING benefits both our students and the greater community. It extends the learning from the classroom and field experiences, and encourages students to become responsible citizens – personally, socially, and globally.

Students Making a Difference

As students engage in learning experiences and service learning projects, they soon begin to realize the connection education has in making the world a better place for humanity.

Service Learning Projects

The Empty Bowls Project is a school-wide service learning experience that has been held each fall since the inception of Riverview. Partnering with Rise Against Hunger, Riverview students, teachers, families and community supporters work cooperatively to package 20,000+ meals for children in orphanages around the world. To prepare for the Empty Bowls event, teachers at every grade level thoughtfully plan the curriculum unit to complement this service  project.

Each Grade at Riverview plans its own Spring service-learning project. Teachers plan a community involvement component that ties into their curriculum and reinforce hands-on learning. For example, our second graders collect Pennies for Poetry, used the change in their math instruction, then donate the monies to support Born to Read. The sixth grade participates in From Seeds to Shoreline by replenishing marsh grass in the Port Royal Sound while in a unit of instruction on living things.
