Riverview believes the best way to construct knowledge is through experiences. Students are encouraged to observe and explore their environment in a community that nurtures and respects each individual child. Through innovative instruction, RCS seeks to connect experiential education with the art of teaching to create learning opportunities that nurture the whole child and prepare each student for a global society.

The Whole Child Approach

Social/Emotional Child

We implement the Responsive Classroom model, which includes a daily morning meeting (advisory for middle school). Students feel a sense of belonging and build empathy, while practicing their speaking and listening skills. A K-8 buddy program allows our students to act as both mentors and mentees to one another as they progress through our Cycles. Our robust counseling team provides tiered support at every Cycle. Students partner with the community through fall and spring Service Learning Projects.

Physical Child

Riverview is a grand prize winner of the Boeing Center for Children’s Wellness Initiative. The Beaufort Twilight Run, Stingray Scramble, Wellness Week, Athletic Booster Club and Field Day are just some of the ways we celebrate the physical child and involve the community in our work. Students enjoy daily recess at all grade levels, and our physical education team builds physical fitness through creative movement, dance, sportsmanship and athletic skills development. Our middle school students engage in more than 10 different sports teams.

Academic Child

Teachers at Riverview write curriculum using an approach called Understanding by Design, in which we begin with the end in mind. We believe that learning by doing, hands on experiences, and rigorous, challenging content create safe spaces where mistakes are opportunities to grow. Capstone trips at each Cycle extend the learning into the real world, providing authentic experiences for application of learning. Fall and spring Portfolio Nights, standard-based report cards, formative and summative assessments and parent conferences provide a clear picture of each student’s progress for families. Our team of learning specialists support students in addressing individual needs.

Aesthetic Child

The wonder of the natural world and a desire to use art to inspire and uplift our community sets the stage for our approach to the aesthetic child. Students at all grade levels create bowls in art class to support our Empty Bowls service learning project. Chorus and band students perform at community events, and students receive instruction in music, creative movement and visual art beginning in Kindergarten. Our student-led video production team creates Riverview’s Morning Show, and every student performs in annual stage productions in grades K-5.

Ethical Child

The Connecting Concepts of Community (Cycle 1), Culture (Cycle 2) and World (Cycle 3) guide us as we develop the ethical child. Beginning in Kindergarten, our students are in the community, engaging with those who lead and model citizenship. Community engagement is foundational to our work at Riverview. Students develop an appreciation of diverse cultures through field experiences, storytelling, and cultural history that is woven into our curriculum. Our middle school students take a global perspective on citizenship, with their international Capstone experience in Costa Rica. 8 Core Values are at the core of our work. Students’ ethical growth is celebrated at Core Value assemblies and through our Core Value postcard program.
