SERVICE and LEARNING benefits both our students and the greater community. It extends the learning from the classroom and field experiences, and encourages students to become responsible citizens – personally, socially, and globally.

Students Making a Difference

As students engage in learning experiences and service learning projects, they soon begin to realize the connection education has in making the world a better place for humanity.

Service Learning Projects

The Empty Bowls Project is a school-wide service learning experience that has been held each fall since the inception of Riverview. Partnering with Rise Against Hunger, Riverview students, teachers, families and community supporters work cooperatively to package 20,000+ meals for children in orphanages around the world. To prepare for the Empty Bowls event, teachers at every grade level thoughtfully plan the curriculum unit to complement this service  project.

At Riverview, each grade level designs its own spring service-learning project, thoughtfully integrating community involvement with classroom instruction. These projects are crafted to reinforce hands-on learning and connect meaningfully to the curriculum. For example, second graders collect Pennies for Poetry, using the coins during math lessons before donating the funds to support the Born to Read program. Sixth graders take part in From Seeds to Shoreline, restoring marsh grass in the Port Royal Sound as part of their science unit on living organisms.
