I joined the board in 2022 because I wanted to give back to the community and the mission of Riverview aligns with my values of nurturing the whole child. As a long-time educator in university settings, I have a keen interest in optimizing learning in K-12 to prepare youth for life after high school. I am also grandmom to a current Stingray and see first hand what makes Riverview a happy and healthy learning environment.
My favorite core value is Perseverance because it embodies our ability to overcome obstacles and achieve success in the classroom and beyond.

I am a second year Riverview School board member, where my grand-daughters also attended. I was so impressed with the discipline the staff demonstrated that it encouraged me to keep grand-daughters enrolled here. When either dropping off or picking up my grand-daughters daily and observing the staff’s dedication toward the children gave my daughter and me a peace of mind.
My favorite core value is integrity which means honesty and trust. This essential value is the attitude shown by the staff toward the children of Riverview Charter School, honesty and trust but firm moral principles and this will live with them forever.

As a military family, we were drawn to Riverview upon our arrival in Beaufort, because of its academic offerings. I’ve always taken a strong interest in my children’s education as I believe in leaving things better than when we arrived. My goal is to position Riverview in a financially stable position for today, and the future.
My favorite core value is integrity, I believe it is the foundation for all core values, and without it, no other value can hold true significance. It is the value that drives my approach for contributing to the Riverview community.

I’m thrilled to join the RCS Board of Directors! My name is Starr M. Hayes, and I have a wealth of experience in education and counseling roles, from traditional school settings to virtual environments. From my time as a School Counselor in North Carolina to my recent role as the Technical College of the Lowcountry TRIO Student Support Services’s Director, I’ve dedicated my career to supporting students in achieving their academic and career goals.
I am the mother of two Riverview students and have been an active member of the Riverview community since 2017. Although each core value holds important significance, my favorite is empathy. Riverview staff and faculty care for each student individually and provide all members of our Riverview community with a voice.

Year 4
I joined the board in 2021 amidst a time of transition during Covid. I have been engaged in Riverview since before it opened, helping start the BTR in 2009, and helping with facilities-related things – this was before we even had children! Now we have three, two who currently attend Riverview, and one rising kindergartener in August 2024. I joined the board to help ensure that the founding principles and mission remained, and grew stronger, during the transition. The incredible learning environment, family atmosphere, and impact on the greater school system in Beaufort County, are what inspire me most about Riverview.
My favorite core value is mindfulness. Having an awareness of others in our daily lives is so important and is something that is under emphasized in society today.

I’m inspired by the dedication and spirit of the Riverview professionals and students who not only embrace our core values, but also bring to life our mission. The deliberate emphasis on nurturing the whole child is clear in every interaction, and it brings me so much pride and joy to see the significant contributions our school is making to the lives of children and to Beaufort county as a whole.
My favorite core value is gratitude–it brings consistent joy to my life and the people surrounding me.

Since 2009, I’ve hoped our family would be students at Riverview Charter School. We are proud to have our three children enrolled at this school that has created a small, diverse learning community. The school’s learning-centered, hands-on, experiential approach has given our family many exciting adventures and challenged us to dream about what we can contribute in today’s (& tomorrow’s) global society. I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve on the board of directors of a school that has meant so much to so many.
All core values are such an important part of this school. From singing the Kindergarten songs to seeing them woven throughout the fabric of homework and projects, I’d have to say my favorite core value is perseverance. Never give up, keep showing up, get up and press on, always!
