SUMMARY:Cycle 1 Capstone Trip to Barrier Island
DESCRIPTION:Second Grade CapstoneIt’s fitting that the capstone “experience” and milestone for our second graders is to participate in a total immersion\, experiential field study of a local barrier island. Students will travel to Seabrook Island\, south of Charleston to enjoy a campus that includes nearly one mile of beach\, 100 acres of salt marsh\, 200 acres of undisturbed maritime forest\, freshwater ponds\, and a freshwater swamp. \nBarrier Island facilities include classrooms\, numerous outdoor teaching sites\, an arts and crafts building\, a climate controlled gymnasium\, a low ropes course\, a beach front recreation hall\,a lighted outdoor recreation field\, a health center\, full service dining hall and climate controlled beach front cabins with bathrooms. Since 1980\, the Barrier Island Environmental Education Program has provided public and private school students in Kindergarten through 12th grades a unique opportunity to learn about and experience nature in a way that is hands-on\, memorable and a whole lot of fun. \nThis learning opportunity gives students the chance to discover the scientific world with all of their senses in an open and encouraging environment designed to see\, smell\, touch\, hear and\, yes\, even taste lessons in biology\, ecology\, conservation\, astronomy\, botany and much more. The kids love it\, and very often have their eyes opened to a world they have never experienced or understood before.

SUMMARY:Beaufort Twilight Run
DESCRIPTION:The annual Beaufort Twilight Run has something for everyone. Hosted in the coastal community of Habersham\, just minutes from historic downtown Beaufort\, The Lowcountry’s Running Festival courses are truly one of a kind\, winding through charming neighborhood streets canopied with Spanish moss and among waterfront parks highlighted by majestic hundred year old oak trees. Even the most focused runners seem to do a double-take as they weave along the greenways adjacent to the Beaufort River during sunset. No wonder the BTR has has drawn participants from over 14 states and even several countries! \nIt could also be the $6\,000 in cash prizes\, recreational runs and walks\, kids activities\, live entertainment and plenty of Lowcountry food that lures runners of all levels to the annual event. The BTR offers four USATF sanctioned competitive courses (10-mile Run\, 8K Run\, 5K Run\, 1-mile Youth Run)\, a 5K Fun Walk and a 1/4 mile Kid’s Fun Run. Participants can compete for the Beaufort Challenge title by running in both the 10-mile and 5K events. Participants and spectators are invited to enjoy the after-party with gourmet food trucks and live music. Indeed\, there is something for everyone. We hope you’ll join us.

SUMMARY:Empty Bowls 2022
DESCRIPTION:What is Empty Bowls?“Empty Bowls” is an international project to fight hunger\, personalized by artists and art organizations on a community level. Each community’s events are self developed and independent. “Empty Bowls” now supports food related charities around the world and has raised millions of dollars to aid in the fight against hunger.\n“Empty Bowls” allows artists and groups to create and donate bowls\, then serve a simple meal or soup. In some communities\, ceramic artists are joined by wood turners\, glassblowers\, fiber artists\, metal smiths\, painters\, sculptors\, and other artists and craftspeople. Riverview K-8 students craft bowls using multi-media like weaving\, ceramics\, photography\, etc. Guests choose a bowl to use to keep as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. In exchange for the meal\, and the bowl\, guests contribute a suggested minimum donation. One hundred percent of each meal’s proceeds are devoted to local hunger-fighting organizations\, such as food banks or soup kitchens\, or to national or international charitable groups. Riverview chooses Rise Against Hunger. An international hunger relief agency that has been fulfilling its commitment to end hunger for more than 15 years. Since 1998\, the organization has coordinated the distribution of food and other lifesaving aid to children and families in countries all over the world. \nThe objectives of “Empty Bowls” are:\nRaise as much money as possible to feed the world’s hungry people. Lives are in the balance.\nIncrease awareness of hunger and related issues. Through education\, awareness\, and action\, concerned individuals can change human attitudes that allow hunger to exist. Advocate for arts education. Nurturing the creative process through the arts enhances the possibility of finding new solutions to old problems.
