SECOND GRADE

Heather Brem, M.Ed.
I am thrilled to be back in Beaufort and a part of Riverview this year.  I grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina and I completed my undergraduate studies at North Carolina State University and Meredith College.  Upon graduation, I moved to Austin, Texas where I taught pre-kindergarten and I met my husband Jerry.  After four years of teaching, I knew a life-long career in the education field was my passion and I pursued graduate school.  I earned my Masters of Education with a minor in reading from Texas State University in San Marcos.  Jerry and I then moved to Durham, North Carolina where I taught first grade for five years.  During this time, I also attained my National Board Certification. Jerry and I recently welcomed our daughter Emma into our lives and look forward to raising her in the beautiful lowcountry.  I am excited to be a part of the Riverview team and I look forward to getting to know all the members of our learning community.

Shannon Duffy, M.Ed.
Like so many of my colleagues here at Riverview, I'm always looking forward to the start of a new school year and its endless possibilities for both students and faculty -- we never know where life is going to take us!  After receiving my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Missouri, I moved to Birmingham, Alabama where I started teaching, and would later earn a Master's from UAB, along with my American Montessori Society 6-9 credentials. I taught for 5 years in Birmingham and one year in Athens, Georgia before moving to Beaufort. With the birth of my oldest son, I took a break from teaching to raise my boys.  After my youngest son headed off to preschool, I was drawn back to teaching where I had five wonderful years at EC Montessori School on Lady’s Island teaching the multi-age 1-3 grade class. I was drawn to Riverview because I saw that my philosophy of teaching matches so seamlessly with what teachers do here at Riverview:  nurture the whole child, create meaningful and real world learning experiences, emphasize learning by doing, and love what you do!

Karen Miller, B.S. Summa Cum Laude
I graduated from Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in Education and Theatre Arts, and came to Beaufort to teach and live. Since I received my degree, I have been active in the community, the classroom, and in my role as mother of 3. I am a South Carolina certified Early Childhood teacher and mentor. Further, I hold an Elementary Accreditation from the American Montessori Society (AMS). My teaching experiences are varied. Over the years, I have taught creative dramatics, led a multiage Montessori elementary classroom, and trained volunteer reading tutors in a local organization called Adopt-A-School, Inc. I also taught at Sea Island Presbyterian Day School in a program I founded in 1999. I began teaching at Riverview in 2009, and I am proud to be part of our fabulous team! I am an educator who believes passionately in developmentally appropriate practices, hands on learning, the power of small groups, the project approach, and differentiated instruction. I have three children, two of which attend Riverview.
