MIDDLE SCHOOL

6th Grade
Science: Katherine Marsh, B.S.
I received my Bachelor's of Science in Biopsychology from the University of California Santa Barbara in the Winter of 2001. I then chose to pursue a career in teaching and graduated from the University of California Irvine in 2003 with a multiple subjects teaching credential. After graduating, I worked as science educator at Back Bay High School with the Newport Mesa Unified School District, teaching both Biology and Earth Science to 9th-12th grade students. In 2006 I accepted a position at a teen recovery center as the Education Coordinator for Kramer Center in Newport Beach. In 2009 I decided to venture abroad and therefore took a one year position teaching high school science in Maidstone, England. Upon returning mid-year, I accepted a position with the Eastern Sierra Unified School District as a Title 1 Intervention teacher at Bridgeport Elementary School. Bridgeport Elementary is an extremely rural environment with an ethnically diverse student body where I taught both math and writing to students grades two through eight. In my spare time I love to read, write and draw, as well as anything that involves being outdoors. Swimming, skiing, and hiking are among my favorites and I also love to travel. In addition to being a teacher, I have been an ocean lifeguard in Newport Beach for over fifteen years and have served as a junior lifeguard instructor for over ten, teaching students 9-15 how to be lifeguards and ocean safe. I am very excited to return with the amazing staff and community at Riverview and look forward to another fabulous year with Riverview Charter School.

7th & 8th Grade Science: Donna Moore, B.S.
I am excited to be teaching 7th and 8th grade science at Riverview!  This is my thirteenth year working as a public school educator.  I am passionate about teaching science and see it as an opportunity to open minds and broaden horizons.  I am a graduate of the South Carolina  Governor's School for Science and Mathematics.  I earned a B.S. in Plant Pathology with a minor in Entomology from Clemson University. I have research experience through Clemson University and the University of Arizona in the fields of plant pathology, plant genetics (specifically cotton), microbial genetics, and soil ecology (with a focus on the interactions between soil microorganisms and plant roots and in tracking the movement of genetically engineered bacteria through the soil solution). I left the university research arena to become a public school teacher in 2000.  As a science teacher, my goal is to foster the development of scientifically literate, discerning individuals. I believe life, earth, and space systems are best understood when presented in an integrated context. I encourage students to develop their analytical thinking, research, communication, and interpersonal skills through inquiry-based instruction that builds conceptual understanding of the natural world. I encourage students to collaborate daily to build understanding and investigate new ideas. My goal is for students to see that everything is connected to everything else so they grow into informed citizens and purposeful stewards of our world.

I graduated from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education.  I later added certification in Special Education and completed a Masters Degree in Elementary Education in 1985.  My teaching experiences have included Physical Education, Special Education, General Math, and Pre-Algebra encompassing grades K-8 in Hampton District One over the past 31 years.  My husband Russ and I moved to Saint Helena Island in 2009 to fulfill our dream of living on the coast. We have two children, Ashley, a 2007 graduate of Clemson University, and Kyle who is currently pursuing a degree in Architectural Engineering.  I have a passion for teaching math and love watching students learn through investigations and hands on experiences.   I am so excited to be joining the Riverview Middle School team.

7th & 8th Grade Math: Stacy Hovest, B.S.
I graduated Cum Laude from Bowling Green State University in Ohio with a bachelor’s degree in Middle Childhood Education.  After graduating, I spent one school year substitute teaching for a variety of schools and for ages ranging from pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade.  A year later my husband and I made the big decision to relocate and move to beautiful Beaufort, SC.  I taught 7th and 8th grade math at Robert Smalls Middle School for five years.  During that time, we had our two wonderful children, Aiden and Claire, and because of them I decided to take a two-year hiatus from teaching.  Now, I am excited to get back to my profession of teaching and look forward to joining the community of Riverview Charter School.  In my spare time, I enjoy reading, walking, going to the beach, and spending time with my family.

7th & 8th Grade English Language Arts:

Tina Daubert, B.A.
I graduated from the University of South Carolina Beaufort with a Bachelor’s of Arts in English. Upon graduating from the university, I was asked to serve on the English Advisory Board for the university.  Serving on the board provided me the opportunity to learn from well respected educators in our community as well as gain a greater understanding as to the characteristics needed to be cultivated in our students to ensure they develop into knowledgeable, critical thinkers and communicators who contribute to society.  I greatly enjoy teaching and sharing my passion for literature with students. As an educator, I consider it my goal to provide students with an opportunity to grow and improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills in a safe and orderly environment. In my experience teaching sixth and eighth grade English Language Arts, I have found that a student’s age is not a clear indicator of academic or emotional strengths; therefore, I work to build strong relationships with my students that enable me to better diagnose their individual needs as we work our way through the intricate structures of reading and writing. I am excited about this coming school year and feel blessed to have the opportunity to inspire and nurture young minds!

6th Grade English Language Arts & Cultural History: Elizabeth Hargrove, B.S.
I graduated from Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio in 2001 with a 2-year Associate Degree in General Studies and a focus in history. Upon completion; I then transferred to culinary school, Johnson and Wales University, in Providence Rhode Island to pursue a degree in Culinary Arts. (I have always had a passion for exotic foods and culinary trends so decided to give the culinary world “a shot”).Upon receiving my Bachelor of Science in Culinary Arts, I traveled to Singapore and Thailand to study Asian cuisine and Asian fusion cuisine. I then took a job in Rockland Maine as a Banquet Chef at the Samoset Resort. After a wonderful run in the culinary world I decided to return to my beloved Ohio, re-enroll in Ashland University and receive my Bachelors certification in Education (Middle Years Language Arts and Social Studies). Both of my parents are/were educators, so I suppose “it is in my blood”. It was just a matter of time until I accepted my destiny, to be a teacher. I am coming to Riverview after teaching for two years in the Beaufort County School district. I have spent the last two years teaching 7th grade Language Arts and while I loved it, I am thrilled to call Riverview my new home. I am so excited to continue teaching language arts, as I have a love for reading, the written word and language in general, but my REAL PASSION is history. Therefore, I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to teach humanities this year too. I have a lot of ideas “up my sleeve.” My “loves” along with teaching are reading, musical theater/performance, cooking and “Honey,” my 4 year old, 72 lb. yellow lab mix, who I recently rescued from a shelter. I am so looking forward to the 2012-2013 school year and feel absolutely blessed to be a part of the amazing faculty and staff at Riverview Charter School.

7th & 8th Grade Cultural History:

Gayle Carroll, M.Ed.
“There is no place like home.” I am a proud native Beaufortonian! A graduate of Winthrop College with teaching experiences ranging from 6th grade through high school juniors in Beaufort, Charleston, Columbia, and Texas…seventeen years in gifted education and twenty plus years in humanities, geography, and history… ten years coaching and mentoring other teachers. I love to learn, I love to work with students who have a curiosity for learning, and I believe that “if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.” Good questions and open-communication are the initial steps to creative problem-solving – listening is the often missing link. Beaufort is such a wonderful community in which to live and learn and all the potential of a true learning laboratory. Our recent flourish of reflection during the Tricentennial has elevated an already enormous pride in who we are because of who came before us. It is with a sense of adventure that I join Riverview and with the expectation that as I learn I will be able to teach; as I am inspired I will be able to share; as I am led I will be able to lead.
